Barking Riverside

Client: Barking Riverside Ltd

Services: Project Ecologist

Special Considerations: Located on the northern bank of the River Thames.

Project Overview/ Summary:
Barking Riverside is one the UK’s largest housing projects being delivered across 443 acres of brownfield site.  Delivered through a joint venture between L&Q and the GLA, it will create a new district with a population of 30,000 on the banks of the river Thames.  The project will deliver 10,800 homes, 65,000 sq m of commercial, retail and leisure space, a London Overground station, cycling and walking networks, seven schools of which four have already been delivered.

2019 will see the opening of the development’s Ecology Centre which will provide community and educational learning opportunities to learn about over 40 species of birds, reptiles, water voles and more.

Residing underneath the Ecology Centre will sit the waste collection station that will collect household waste via 460 inlets which will replace 19000 traditional bins.

Remediation works of the former Renwick Road landfill site and power station foundations are essential. The remediation will provide revised ground contours and development platforms, strategic landscaping and works to create new improved/retained ecological reserves, open space (including parks, play spaces, promenades and piazzas, formal and informal play space) and improved flood defences.   Habitat creation forms a large part of the development ensuring that the development not only replaces the habitat being lost but also, provides a greater quality then what was originally present.  This will ensure the site’s ecology greatly benefits from the development but also in a way which can be enjoyed by residents and visitors.

Arcus provides all ecological support and management across the development site and to multiple Principal Contractors.  Ecological input includes, ecological clerk of works, compliance audit checks, protected species surveying and licencing where required, mitigation design and supervision, support throughout all planning applications, training provision to site personnel and client teams, stakeholder and project team meeting attendance and, input into development design.
