Odour Modelling and Assessment – Mars Foods, Kings Lynn, Norfolk

Scope – Odour modelling and assessment was undertaken to support a planning application for a proposed waste water treatment plant at a food processing site. The assessment used air dispersion modelling to predict the effects of odour emissions from a balancing tank which would contain waste water from the plant. Odour concentrations arising from the plant were calculated at a number of residential receptors in proximity to the development which were then compared with guideline levels for odour.

Solution – Mitigation was proposed that included odour monitoring and remodelling once the plant became operational, given the dependence of odour of the source material and processes. This enabled planning permission to be granted in the absence of detailed odour information.
