Badgers are legally protected in the UK. They are a mobile and widespread species frequently encountered on greenfield and brownfield sites. A survey for evidence of badgers and to locate their setts is necessary for many developments and can be completed as part of a Preliminary Ecological Appraisal.
Surveys can be done throughout the year because badgers are active year-round and can be identified by their setts and field signs such as prints, dung pits and well-worn pathways, which can show badgers are active in the area even if there are no setts on site. We often deploy camera traps to obtain photographic evidence.
If a development is likely to cause to disturbance or harm to badgers, our ecologists will be able to consult with the relevant authorities and develop appropriate mitigation, including potentially closing a sett under licence.
