Every year, Edinburgh Science Festival hosts a week-long careers education event aimed at giving school students a glimpse into the interesting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM). The Careers Hive connects professionals from a wide range of STEM industries with school students aged between 11 and 14 through demonstration activities, seminars and “speed networking”. The aim of the event is to show students the opportunities and types of work available within the STEM industries allowing them to relate the subjects they study at school with their real word applications.
This year, the Careers Hive moved online, with industry volunteers interacting with over 2400 students from all over Scotland through activities and question and answer sessions via Gather. Representing the field of acoustics was Emily Tilbury, a member of the Noise and Acoustics Team at Arcus. Over the course of two days, Emily fielded questions from a number of interested students about the often-unknown area of acoustics, linking the maths and physics (and occasionally musical) subjects learned at school with the requirements of her job as an Acoustic Consultant. If you would like to find out more about the field of acoustics, and the services we can provide, please get in touch on 0141 221 9997 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
